Principle Models: How to Make Consistent Decisions
Principle Models provide a foundation for consistent and rational decision-making. Unlike mental models (explains how the world works) or mental methods (that guide action), principle models establish how you consistently choose to act within that world. They ensure that when circumstances change, our judgement doesn’t.
Principle models are not tools or techniques. They are commitments. For example, Ray Dalio’s principle of “Radical Transparency” builds cultures where truth is prioritized over comfort. Other principles, like “long-term over short-term” help us delay gratification for greater impact. Used well, principle models prevent emotional drift and decision fatigue. They clarify who we are and how we choose to move through the world – again and again.
