Mental Model: First Principle Thinking

First Principles Thinking (FP) is a powerful problem-solving method. The concept breaks down complex issues into their foundational elements. instead of relying on existing assumptions, FP challenges the status qou by offering a fresh path toward innovation. Notable figures like Elon Musk deploy this mental model, which he attributes to many of his breakthroughs.

What is First Principles Thinking?

First Principles (FP) Thinking involves deconstructing problems into their core components. It discards preconceived notions and builds solutions from the ground up. Unlike reasoning by analogy, which uses existing models and methods, FP thinking focuses on what is fundamentally true.

Techniques for Applying First Principles Thinking:

  1. Socratic Questioning: This method involves a systematic approach to asking deeper questions. It aims to uncover the basic truths behind an issue:
    1. Clarifying your thinking: Ask yourself – “Why do I think this? What are the roots of my ideas?”
    2. Challenge assumptions: Consider – “How do I know this is true?”
    3. Look for evidence: Seek validation – “what are my sources? Can I back this up with data?
    4. Consider alternatives: Broaden your view – “What do others think? Could there be a better approach?”
    5. Examine consequences: Think ahead – “What if I am wrong? What will happen if I proceed?”
    6. Question the original questions: Reassess – “Why did I ask this? What new conclusions can I draw?”

  2. The Five “Whys”: Repeatedly ask “why” to identify the root cause of a problem.
    1. The Five Whys:
      • What is the problem?
      • Why did the problem occur?
      • Why the reason in question #2 happened?
      • Why the reason in question #3 happened?
      • Why the reason in question #4 happened?
        • Example: The vehicle will not start = (1). The battery is dead. WHY? (2). The alternator is not functioning. WHY? (3). The alternator belt is broken. WHY? (4). The alternator belt is well beyond its useful service life and not replaced. WHY? (5) The vehicle was not maintained according to the recommended service schedule (root cause).

  3.  Elon Musk‘s Approach:
    • Step 1: Define your assumptions.
    • Step 2: Break down the problem into fundamental principles.
    • Step 3: Rebuild from scratch, creating innovative solutions.
