Occam’s Razor is a timeless principle in logic and problem-solving. It’s primary aim is to emphasize simplicity. This mental model encourages us to favor explanations with the fewest assumptions when analyzing phenomena or solving problems. Originally articulated by William of Ockham, a 14th century philosopher, the idea can be summed up as follows: the simplest explanation is usually the best explanation. Limitations to Occam’s Razor:
While powerful, Occam’s Razor is not an absolute law. Some truths are inherently complex and demand detailed exploration. Its strength lies in starting simple and refining the approach as new evidence arises. As Varol highlights,
Like all sharp objects, Occam’s razor can cut both ways. In some cases, the complex solution will lead to a better result. Don’t use Occam’s razor to validate the natural human craving for simplicity in the face of nuance and complexity. Don’t confuse a simple solution, as H.L. Mencken cautioned, with one that is ‘neat, plausible, and wrong.’ Even as you seek to simplify, remain open to new facts that complicate matters. As the English mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead put it, “Seek simplicity and distrust it.” To cut is to make whole. To subtract is to add. To constrain is to liberate.
